50 Then Abimelech marched to Thebez and set up camp against it, a city located near Shechem.

51-53 All the men and women of Thebez retreated to the top of their fortified tower, which was a common feature in Canaanite strongholds. These towers often served as last refuges for the inhabitants. Assyrian reliefs depict scenes similar to this one, with besieged cities, towers, and defenders fighting from the battlements.
