7. Jotham stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted at the top of his voice. He chose this spot because it was a public place in Shechem where everyone could hear him. The parable he told (Jud 9:8-15) was fitting for the diverse landscape below, with its various trees. Eastern people often used parables to convey reproofs that they couldn't express otherwise.
The top of Gerizim is not far from the town and overlooks the valley, making it easy for Jotham's voice to carry to the city. In fact, sound travels remarkably well in the eastern climate, allowing voices to be heard clearly over long distances (Hackett). There are historical accounts of soldiers shouting to people in cities below, trying to incite them to rebellion.
13. The wine that cheers both God and man is not enjoyed by them in the same way. When sacrifices were accepted, it could be said that God was "cheered" by the wine, just as He is honored by oil (Jud 9:9).
21. After delivering his message, Jotham went to Beer, a village on the ridge overlooking Jerusalem.
