1Sa 23:14-18 David Escapes to Ziph.

David Escapes to Ziph.

The wilderness of Ziph was a mountainous region with a large town at its center. Two miles southeast of Hebron lies Tell-ziph, an isolated hill that may have been the acropolis or ruins of the ancient city of Ziph. This area was once covered in extensive woods but has since lost them due to human devastation.

Jonathan visited David in this wooded area and encouraged him with a reminder of their mutual covenant with God. Jonathan's faith must have overcome his natural feelings and worldly considerations, allowing him to confidently speak about his family being replaced by David as the future leader. This remarkable friendship was characterized by purity, nobility, and self-denial, making it one of the most admirable in history or literature.
