They Repent; God Pities Them.
When Israel abandoned their idolatrous practices and returned to serving the Lord, God's heart was moved with compassion for their suffering. This change of heart led to a reduction in the duration of their national affliction and brought about times of peace.
The children of Ammon, who had been waging guerrilla warfare against Israel, now gathered together for a sustained campaign. Their goal was to take control of all the territory east of the Jordan River from its current occupants. In response to this crisis, the Israelites held a general assembly at Mizpeh, a location in eastern Manasseh (Joshua 11:3).
