The Israelites again turned away from the Lord in a most egregious idolatrous apostasy, surpassing all previous instances in its grossness and widespread nature.

Philistine and Ammonite forces launched predatory attacks on the regions adjacent to their territories. However, the Ammonites, driven by a spirit of conquest, crossed into Canaan, ravaging large areas of the central and southern provinces.
