5-11. The Lord your God will drive them out before you, just as He has promised you, and so on. The land that God had already given to Israel was a guarantee of His promise to give them the rest of the country. However, the fulfillment of this divine promise depended on their unwavering commitment to obeying God's law. They were to maintain a strict separation from the Canaanites and avoid any involvement with their idolatrous practices (Lev 26:7; Deut 28:7; 32:30).

11. So, be careful to love the Lord your God above all else. This is the essence of his exhortation, as it is the culmination of God's law (Deut 6:5; 11:13; Matt 22:37).
