This parable is similar to Matthew 5:15 and Mark 4:3-9, 14-20.

16. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar; rather, they put it on a stand so that those who come in may see the light.

17. For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing concealed that will not be known.

18. Consider how you listen: or, as Jesus says elsewhere, what you hear. The principle here is straightforward: if you truly understand something, it will become a part of you; but if it only seems to be yours, it remains superficial and untransformed.
