The Baptist's Message, the Reply, and Consequent Discourse.
29-30 The people who heard John's message were amazed by it. They included tax collectors, a group often viewed with suspicion. These individuals acknowledged that God was at work through John's baptism, which led them to Jesus. In contrast, the Pharisees and lawyers refused John's baptism and also rejected Jesus' message.
31-35 The Lord responded to their criticism by pointing out that they had rejected both John and himself. They saw John as too extreme, while they viewed Jesus as too lenient and associated with unsavory characters. However, those who were wise recognized the value of God's wisdom in both John and Jesus, regardless of their different approaches. As Proverbs 27:7 says, "The full soul loathes a honeycomb, but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet."
