Joshua Appointed to Succeed Him.

Moses is instructed to take Joshua and lay his hands on him, indicating that Joshua possesses the Spirit of God. This ceremony was an ancient practice (Genesis 48:14; Leviticus 1:4; 1 Timothy 4:14).

The transfer of honor from Moses to Joshua is described in verses 20-21. Although no one else in Israel's history rivaled Moses' stature, Joshua was uniquely qualified and honored through the high priest's special service. The high priest sought guidance for Joshua by consulting the Urim before the Lord.
