Moses Being Told of His Approaching Death, Asks for a Successor.

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Go up into this mountain Abarim and see the land." Although the Israelites were now on the borders of the promised land, Moses was not allowed to cross the Jordan. Instead, he would die on one of the Moabitic mountains, known as Abarim (Numbers 33:47). This honor was withheld from him due to his unfortunate conduct at Meribah, where he struck the rock in disobedience (Numbers 20:12).

Despite submitting meekly to God's decree, Moses demonstrated genuine patriotism by fervently praying for a worthy and competent successor. In Numbers 27:15-17, we see this request.

God of all spirits and souls, appoint a leader over this community. This request was fitting because it acknowledged God as the Author of human gifts and graces, capable of raising up qualified individuals for even the most challenging tasks.
