He Invades the Priest's Office, and Is Smitten with Leprosy.
Uzziah's actions were a grave transgression against God (2Ki 15:5). This bold and wicked act was driven by his excessive pride and vanity. The high priest, accompanied by eighty other priests, opposed Uzziah's entrance into the Most Holy Place and strongly protested his actions (1Ch 6:10). However, Uzziah responded with rage and threats.
As a result of his defiance, God intervened to protect the sacredness of the priestly office. At the moment Uzziah lifted the censer, he was struck with leprosy. This event is also connected to an earthquake that occurred at the time (Am 1:1), according to Josephus' account.
Uzziah's condition forced him to live in a separate house, essentially an infirmary (Bertheau). He died there and was buried in a field near the burial ground of the kings, rather than being interred within it. This was due to the fact that his corpse would have polluted the royal sepulcher as a leper's body does.
