David and all Israel marched against the Jebusites to conquer their stronghold in Jerusalem.

The city had been occupied by the Jebusites for a long time (see 2 Samuel 5:6).

Joab was tasked with restoring the rest of the city that David had not yet rebuilt. This included repairing breaches made during the siege, rebuilding houses that had been destroyed or burned, and preserving any structures that remained intact after the violence of war.
