All Israel gathered around David in Hebron at this time. This gathering occurred after the death of Ish-bosheth (see 2 Samuel 5:1). The convention of the kingdom's leaders, the public recognition by the people's representatives, and the repeated anointing of the new king in their presence were necessary for the nation to acknowledge David as its sovereign (compare 1 Samuel 11:15).
