Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and the people, which was unusual due to the secrecy with which the conspiracy had been conducted.

She came into the temple of the Lord, entering the courts where she was allowed by Jehoiada's instructions (2Ki 11:8) in order to be secure.

The king stood by a pillar, or on a platform erected for that purpose (see 2Ch 6:13).

Without the ranges, or fences, surrounding the sacred area, so as not to defile it with human blood.
