1Ki 8:22-61 His Prayer.

Solomon stood before the altar in the court of the people, on a brazen scaffold erected for the occasion (2Ch 6:13). This platform faced the altar of burnt offering and was surrounded by a massive crowd. With hands lifted high and in a posture of supplication, he performed the solemn act of consecration.

This remarkable prayer (1Ki 8:22-35) expresses sentiments of profound piety and deep humility. It naturally refers to the national blessing and curse contained in the law. After praising God for granting the blessing, Solomon earnestly petitions for deliverance from the curse. He specifies seven situations where God's merciful intervention would be necessary, and he asks that this mercy be granted when people pray towards the holy place.

The blessing addressed to the people at the end (1Ki 8:56-61) is essentially a brief summary of the preceding prayer.
