The word of the Lord came to Elijah, directing him to go to Zarephath, a town located on the western coast of Palestine, about nine miles south of Sidon and within the dominions of Jezebel's father. The famine that had gripped the land also prevailed in this region.
Upon entering the town, Elijah encountered a widow who was appointed by divine providence to support him. However, when he asked her for assistance, she revealed that her supplies were exhausted and that she was preparing her last meal for herself and son. This news severely tested Elijah's faith as he learned of their desperate situation.
The Spirit of God prompted Elijah to ask the widow for some necessary aid, and she was led to grant his request. In doing so, she received a prophet's reward (Matthew 10:41-42), and for the one meal afforded to Elijah, God miraculously increased her meager stock, providing many meals for her as well.
