Before passing to the line of the promised seed, the historian provides a brief account of Ishmael's descendants to demonstrate that the promises made about him were fulfilled in two ways: first, in the greatness of his posterity (compare Genesis 17:20); and secondly, in their independence.
Ishmael died, but it is more accurate to say that his lot fell in the presence of his brothers (compare Genesis 16:12).
