Jud 3:8-11 Othniel Delivers Israel.

Othniel Delivers Israel.

The Israelites were sold into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim, a name that likely reflected his cruel and wicked character. They served him for eight years, paying an annual tribute that must have been a heavy burden on their labor and resources.

When the Israelites cried out to the Lord in their distress, they did so with genuine prayer and humble confession of their sins. Othniel, a military leader known for his bravery and experience (Jud 1:13), was chosen by God to lead them. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, empowering him to judge Israel and take on the task of defeating Chushan-rishathaim.

Othniel's leadership involved promoting a general reformation of manners, abolishing idolatry, and reviving pure religion among the people. He then gathered a select group of warriors to fight against their oppressors. The Lord delivered Chushan-rishathaim into Othniel's hand, and through God's blessing, the Israelites emerged victorious.

Canaan was finally freed from foreign domination, and its independence was restored. However, this victory came at a cost, as Othniel eventually died, leaving behind an example of the significant impact one good person can have in times of crisis.
