27. A large crowd of about three thousand men and women had gathered on the roof to watch Samson as he entertained them.
This building was likely a wooden amphitheater, similar to those found in ancient Rome and still used today in many Eastern countries. The spectators stood on a raised platform supported by two pillars, which allowed everyone to see into the central area. Two large beams held up the structure, resting on these pillars that were positioned very close together. When these pillars gave way, the entire building would collapse.
28. Samson called out to the Lord in prayer as he prepared for his final act. His penitent and prayerful spirit suggests that this was not a selfish or vindictive act, but rather an expression of his strength as a public servant. He saw himself as dying for his country's cause, even though death was not his intention. It was the inevitable consequence of his great effort.
His prayer was likely a silent cry to God, and its revelation to the historian indicates that it was approved and accepted by God.
31. After Samson's death, his brothers and the rest of their family came down from the building, took him up, and buried him. This tragic event seemed to leave the Philistines in shock, and they did not attempt to interfere with the removal of Samson's body or harass the Israelites for a long time afterward.
Samson's bravery and strength had rendered significant services to his country, earning him a reputation as its greatest champion. However, his enslavement to his passions was unworthy of such a great man and diminishes our respect for his character. Despite this, he is remembered among the ancient heroes who maintained their faith in God (Hebrews 11:32).
