Plucking Corn-ears on the Sabbath.
The event described here occurred on a second sabbath after the first day of unleavened bread. The exact meaning of this phrase is unclear and appears only in this passage. It's generally understood to refer to the first sabbath following the second day of unleavened bread, but the reasoning behind this interpretation is not provided.
The Lord also claimed authority over the Sabbath (v 5). This assertion was a direct claim to the same authority as the one who gave the law at Mount Sinai. In effect, He said, "I have already justified those men you criticize on my account: now, in this place, I am the Lord of the law, and they have my approval."
