Last Passover--Institution of the Supper--Discourse at the Table.
7. The day of unleavened bread was approaching, specifically the fourteenth Nisan, which fell on a Thursday. This is an unusual timing, as the paschal lamb was typically killed on the fifteenth of Nisan. However, we cannot delve into the complexities of this issue here.
10-13. When you enter the city, a man will meet you carrying a jar of water. (See Luke 19:29-32 for more information.)
14-18. The hour had arrived around six P.M., between three and six when the lamb was killed according to Exodus 12:6. Jesus expressed His desire to eat this Passover meal with them, as it would be His last before He suffered. This event would later become a symbol of Christ our Passover sacrificed for us (1 Corinthians 5:7), marking the transition from the old covenant to the new.
15. With great longing, I have desired to share this meal with you, knowing that it will be my final one before I suffer. As we eat and drink together, remember that this is not just a farewell but also a promise of our future celebration in the Kingdom of God (Matthew 26:29).
17. Jesus took the cup, which was the first of several cups used during this service. He instructed them to divide it among themselves, indicating that they would no longer share this meal together until the Kingdom of God comes.
21, 22. (See John 13:21 for more information.)
24-30. There had been a previous disagreement among the disciples, which seemed to resurface as Jesus entrusted two of them with the responsibility of preparing the Passover arrangements. This led to a heated discussion about who was considered superior among them.
25. The title "benefactors" was often used by those in positions of power, and it was something that princes eagerly sought after.
26. However, Jesus pointed out that this emphasis on titles and superiority is meaningless, as it does not bring true greatness or recognition from God.
28. Despite the tension among them, Jesus continued to show His tender side, demonstrating His susceptibility to human sympathy and support.
