This passage is closely related to Mark 10:32-34 (see on that verse). Jesus now explicitly states that all the Old Testament writings about the Son of man would be fulfilled in Him. This shows how Christ Himself understood the Old Testament, which some interpreters have claimed contains few or no prophecies about the sufferings of the Son of man.

The Evangelist emphasizes that at this time, none of Jesus' disciples fully grasped the significance of these plain statements. Their lack of understanding would later add weight to their testimony, making it all the more compelling and convincing when they finally came to understand the truth.
