1-3. In this context, Jesus had been speaking openly and plainly, as tensions between Him and His enemies were escalating. This led Him to warn His disciples about hypocrisy.
He began by addressing them first, then later expanded his message to the multitudes (Luke 12:54). He emphasized that true concealment is impossible, as everything will eventually come to light. Therefore, it's essential to speak truthfully and fearlessly.
4-5. Jesus said, "You might lose your life because of this." But He reassured them, "Don't worry; their power ends there." By calling them His friends, Jesus expressed a sense of shared suffering in the face of persecution.
He repeated the phrase "Fear Him" to drive home the point that only one fear can effectively replace another. This repetition highlights the importance of fearing God above all else.

Jesus taught several lessons here: (1) Trying to save your life by compromising your convictions may ultimately fail, as God can bring about a more severe punishment. (2) There is a hell that awaits not only the soul but also the body, with corresponding sufferings. (3) Even Christ's friends should be motivated by fear of God's judgment. (4) Those who soften Jesus' message to please others lack His spirit and gentleness.
6-7. Jesus used an example from everyday life to illustrate the value of each person in God's sight. He said that even a small bird, worth only two farthings, is not forgotten by God. This simplicity highlights the power and charm of Jesus' teaching.
8-9. When we confess or deny Christ before others, it's essential to do so with courage, despite any shame we might feel. However, when we take such a stand, Jesus promises to reward us in kind by confessing our faith before the angels of God.
10. The phrase "Son of man" refers to Jesus' role as the divine-human mediator (see Matthew 12:31-32).
