Healing of the Demoniac Boy--Second Explicit Announcement of His Approaching Death and Resurrection (Mr 9:14-32).

Healing of the Demoniac Boy (Mr 9:14-29).

14 When Jesus came to his disciples, he saw a large crowd surrounding them and the scribes questioning them. This was on the next day after they had come down from the hill where the Transfiguration took place. As He approached the other nine apostles, He found them surrounded by a great multitude and the scribes disputing with them.

15 The people were amazed when they saw Him, and they ran to Him, saluting Him. Jesus ignored their amazement and addressed the scribes, asking what was the subject of their discussion.

16 A man in the crowd cried out for help, saying, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has seizures and suffers greatly. He often falls into the fire or into water." The father had brought his son to Jesus' disciples, but they were unable to heal him.

17 Jesus replied, "You faithless generation, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you?" Then He said to His disciples, "Bring the boy here to me."

18 Jesus rebuked the demon and healed the boy. The demon threw the boy into convulsions and came out of him, but not before causing a great commotion.

19 The crowd was amazed at what had happened, and they were discussing it among themselves. They asked Jesus' disciples why they could not cast out the demon.

20 Jesus replied, "This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting." In other words, this type of evil spirit cannot be expelled without intense spiritual preparation and self-denial.

21 The disciples asked Jesus why they were unable to cast out the demon. He explained that it was because of their lack of faith. However, He also taught them that with even a small amount of faith, they could accomplish great things.

Second Explicit Announcement of His Approaching Death and Resurrection (Mr 9:30-32).

30 After this, Jesus and His disciples left the area and traveled through Galilee in secret. Jesus did not want anyone to know where He was going.

31 As they journeyed, Jesus taught His disciples about their future. He said, "The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him." This announcement was a reminder that Jesus' time on earth was limited.

32 However, Jesus also told them that after He was killed, He would rise from the dead on the third day. Despite this clear teaching, His disciples did not understand what He meant. They were afraid to ask Him any questions and were filled with sorrow at the thought of losing their beloved teacher.
