The Form of Blessing the People.
This passage records the solemn benediction God appointed for dismissing the people at the close of the daily service. The repetition of the name "Lord" three times expresses the mystery of the Godhead: one God in three persons. The expressions in each clause correspond to the respective offices of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The first clause, "the Lord bless you," reflects the Father's role as a benevolent provider. The second clause, "the Lord keep you," corresponds to the Son's office as a guardian and protector. The third clause, "the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you," highlights the Holy Spirit's work of granting peace and favor.
Because this benediction is pronounced by a fellow human being, yet derives its power from God, an encouraging assurance was added: "I the Lord will bless them."
