Nu 17:1-13 Aaron's Rod Flourishes.

Aaron's Rod Flourishes.

To settle the controversy over the priesthood once and for all, God instructed Moses to have each of the twelve princes, representing their tribes, bring a rod from their family with their name inscribed on it. This was done to ensure that the selection process was fair and transparent. The rods were then placed in the tabernacle near the ark, where a miraculous sign would confirm God's choice for the priesthood.

The rod of Aaron was among those laid down, either as one of the twelve or possibly as a thirteenth rod placed in the center (Hebrews 9:4). These rods were likely old, dry sticks or wands passed down from one family head to the next.

Moses entered the tabernacle, where he witnessed an extraordinary sight. Aaron's rod had miraculously flourished, bearing fruit at different stages of growth simultaneously – buds, blossoms, and fruit (according to Josephus).

To serve as a lasting reminder of God's choice and a warning against future rebellion, Moses was instructed to return Aaron's rod to its place near the ark.

The people were filled with fear, recalling past judgments and anticipating potential future rebellions. They exclaimed, "We are doomed! We will perish!" This outburst was likely driven by their concern that even minor offenses would incur God's stern justice, leading to destruction for all. However, some interpret this as a sign of discontent rather than reverence and submission.
