This day is holy unto the Lord; therefore do not mourn or weep. The people were deeply affected by a sense of their national sins, which had been brought to their remembrance through the reading of the law and its denunciations. This painful reminder stirred up penitential sorrow in their hearts.
However, despite this somber mood, they were encouraged to cultivate feelings of joy and thankfulness associated with a sacred festival (see Leviticus 23:24). By sharing portions of the celebration with their poorer brethren (Deuteronomy 16:11, 14; Esther 9:19), they would enable them to participate in the public rejoicings.
