When Ezra heard these words, he sat down, overcome with emotion, and mourned for some time. He then fasted and prayed earnestly that God would favor his purpose of asking the king's permission to go to Jerusalem.
Ezra was the king's cupbearer, a position of great rank and influence in the ancient Oriental courts. As such, he had confidential duties and frequent access to the royal presence, which gave him significant authority.
