Ezr 9:1-4 Ezra Mourns for the Affinity of the People with Strangers.

1-2. After these events took place, Ezra began to implement his royal commission in Jerusalem. He publicly presented the contributions and sacred vessels brought from Babylon to be deposited in the temple, making known his office to the people. Then he privately presented his credentials to the provincial governors, taking a prudent approach to utilize all the advantages granted by the king.

On the surface, everything seemed to be thriving in the church and country. However, as Ezra became more acquainted with the situation, he discovered significant corruptions that required immediate correction. One particular issue stood out: a serious abuse related to marriage laws.

The princes came to me, saying - The information they shared with Ezra revealed that many people had entered into marriages with Gentile women in direct violation of God's law (Deuteronomy 7:2-3). This disorderly practice was not limited to the lower classes; several priests, Levites, and leading men were also involved. This irregularity would lead to numerous negative consequences, including increased idolatry and a breakdown of the distinctions between Israelites and other people.

Ezra foresaw these dangers but felt overwhelmed by the difficulty of correcting the evil, given that families had been established and important interests were at stake.

3. When I heard this thing, I tore my garment and mantle - These outer and inner garments symbolized not only great grief but also a deep fear of God's wrath.

I plucked off the hair from my head and beard - This was an even more significant sign of overpowering grief.

4. Then all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me - The pious people who revered God's word and feared its consequences joined Ezra in mourning the public sin and seeking a way to correct it.

I sat stunned until the evening sacrifice - The news of such a gross violation of God's law by those restored from captivity left Ezra speechless and immobile. At the usual time for the evening sacrifice, he again rent his hair and garments and made public prayer and confession of sin.
