1Ch 13:1-8 David Fetches the Ark from Kirjath-jearim.

David Fetches the Ark from Kirjath-jearim.

1-3. David consulted with the leaders of Israel about bringing the ark of God back to Jerusalem. This decision was motivated by a desire to restore the dignity and honor of God's presence among his people, as well as a sense of responsibility as the newly appointed king under God's covenant. As ruler, David recognized the importance of prioritizing the worship and service of God.

He proposed establishing the ark in a more accessible location, where it could be seen and revered by all. The assembly of leaders, known as the Sheloshim (princes of thousands), was convened to discuss this proposal. During the previous king's reign, the ark had been neglected, leading to a decline in the people's commitment to worship and sacrifice.

The idea of relocating the ark was widely accepted, as it would bring attention back to the central aspect of Israel's worship. The proposal was seen as a way to revitalize the nation's spiritual life and restore its connection with God.

2. David asked for the leaders' approval, saying, "If this seems good to you and is in line with God's will, let us send out messengers to our brothers throughout the land." He wanted to inform all Israel about his plan and gather them together for a national assembly.

He also instructed that the priests and Levites be notified in their cities and towns. The royal edict would have been followed by an announcement of a specific date for the ceremony, but it was delayed due to the sudden invasion of the Philistines. After peace was restored, David resumed his preparations to bring the ark to Jerusalem.

5. The route from Shihor of Egypt, a small brook near modern-day El-arish, to the northern boundary of Palestine at Hemath, would have been taken by those transporting the ark.

6-14. David led all Israel to Baalah, where the ark was located.
