2Ki 24:17-20 Zedekiah's Evil Reign.

Zedekiah's Evil Reign.

The king of Babylon appointed Mattaniah, Josiah's youngest son and brother of Jehoahaz, as the new king in place of Jehoiachin. This was a continuation of Nebuchadnezzar's policy of maintaining a semblance of monarchy. However, he changed Mattaniah's name to Zedekiah, which means "The righteous of God." It appears that Zedekiah chose this name for himself, and it was confirmed by the Babylonian king.

Zedekiah's heart remained impenitent and unresponsive to God's word, much like his predecessor Jehoiakim. This attitude would ultimately prove disastrous for Judah.

Through God's righteous providence, Zedekiah's policy as king led to his country's downfall. He rebelled against the king of Babylon, likely influenced by ambassadors from neighboring states who sought to form an alliance against their common Assyrian oppressor. Despite Jeremiah's warnings against this move, Zedekiah persisted in his revolt, demonstrating his infatuation and disregard for truth (Jeremiah 17:3; 28:1).
