17. Ahaz cut off the decorative borders from the temple bases to use them for his palace decorations.
18. The Sabbath portico was a covered entrance through which priests entered the temple on the Sabbath day. He also removed the king's private entrance into the temple, which allowed him to enter without being seen by the public. By making these changes, Ahaz aimed to secure the temple entrance from potential invaders, specifically the Assyrian king, in case of a siege.
