Adonijah fled to the altar and grasped its horns, likely the altar of burnt offering on Mount Zion where Abiathar, one of his supporters, served as high priest. The horns of the altar symbolized God's salvation and mercy to sinners (Exodus 21:14). However, Adonijah's actions disqualified him from this sanctuary, as he had rebelled against the reigning king.
Solomon spared Adonijah's life on condition that he would live a quiet, peaceful life in private, avoiding involvement with the court or kingdom.
