2Sa 8:15-18 His Reign.

15. David maintained justice and fairness in all his dealings with his people, even as he was engaged in foreign conflicts. He had a well-organized system of government at home, with some of the most respected leaders of the time serving on his council.

16. Joab led the army by virtue of a special promise made to him (2 Samuel 5:8).

17. Zadok and Ahimelech served as priests. After Saul's massacre of the priests at Nob (1 Samuel 22:19), Saul had given the priesthood to Zadok, who belonged to the family of Eleazar (1 Chronicles 6:50). However, David acknowledged Ahimelech, a priest from Ithamar's family, who had fled to him. When David became king over all Israel, both priests retained their positions: Ahimelech served at Jerusalem, and Zadok at Gibeon (1 Chronicles 16:39).

18. The Cherethites were actually Philistines (Zechariah 2:5). The Pelethites came from the town of Pelet (1 Chronicles 12:3) and were a group of brave men who had accompanied David during his time in exile among the Philistines, eventually becoming his personal bodyguards.
