David reviewed his army and counted those who were with him. The rugged warriors from Gilead responded in large numbers to their leaders' calls, so despite having no funds to pay troops, David quickly assembled a significant force. A pitched battle was now unavoidable. However, given the high stakes of the king's life, he was not permitted to lead the charge personally and instead divided his forces into three detachments under Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, commander of the foreign guards.
