He Forms a Conspiracy.
10. Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel to gauge public opinion and encourage those loyal to his cause to be ready to join him as soon as he was proclaimed king. The announcement would be made by the sound of trumpets, likely stationed on hills and at strategic locations, allowing the news to spread quickly across the land.
11. Accompanying Absalom were two hundred men who were considered prominent and respected individuals. Their presence created the impression that the king himself supported the movement and was willing to share power with his oldest son due to age and infirmity.
12. Absalom summoned Ahithophel, a man he knew would join the rebellion, likely motivated by anger and revenge against David for his treatment of Bath-sheba, who was Ahithophel's granddaughter according to Jewish tradition.
Giloh, near Hebron.
The conspiracy was gaining strength as one region after another in the kingdom joined the insurgents. This rapid spread indicates deep-seated dissatisfaction with David's rule and government. Contributing factors included the remaining loyalists of Saul, the controversy surrounding Bath-sheba, Joab's arrogant behavior and crimes, and the administration's negligence and obstruction of justice.
