Absalom fled and went to Talmai. The law regarding premeditated murder (Numbers 35:21) made it impossible for him to remain in his own country without facing punishment. As a result, he had no choice but to leave the kingdom and seek refuge at the court of Geshur with his maternal grandfather, who would likely condone his actions.
