Ge 40:9-15 The Butler's Dream.

The Butler's Dream.

In Joseph's dream, he saw a vine before him, representing the king taking exercise and being attended by his butler, who gave him a refreshing drink. In ancient Egypt, kings were expected to practice moderation in their use of wine (see Wilkinson). Here, the king was drinking a prepared beverage, possibly similar to modern-day sherbet.

The scene unfolded with great attention to detail: the cup was washed, the grape juice was pressed into it, and then handed to the king. The butler's actions were done in the king's presence, with care and precision.

Joseph interpreted this dream as follows: Within three days, the butler would be restored to his former position of honor and privilege. As he shared this joyful news, Joseph also appealed to the officer for help in securing his own release from prison. This heartfelt plea reveals a deep sadness and longing for freedom that even Joseph's faith and trust in God could not fully alleviate.
