Here is the rewritten chapter in modern English:

As Samuel poured oil on Saul's head and kissed him, he said, "The Lord has chosen you to lead his people." The two men at Rachel's tomb told them that their lost donkeys had been found, but they were actually searching for a new king. They continued to Bethel, where three men carrying gifts met them: one with bread, another with wine, and a third with kids. These men gave Saul two loaves of bread.

As he journeyed on, the people of Israel came together at Mizpeh, led by Samuel. The Lord spoke, "I rescued you from Egypt and freed you from your oppressors. Yet today you have rejected me, the one who saved you, and asked for a king instead." He told them to arrange themselves by tribes and thousands.

Samuel called forward each tribe, starting with Benjamin, but when he arrived at the family of Matri, Saul was nowhere to be found. They searched again, asking God if there was another suitable candidate. This time, the Lord said, "Look among the baggage," and they found Saul hiding among the supplies. He stood tall above the crowd, and Samuel pointed him out as the one chosen by the Lord.

The people cheered, shouting, "God save the king!" Then Samuel explained to them the nature of their new kingdom and recorded it in a sacred book before the Lord. After that, he dismissed everyone to return home.

Saul, now accompanied by men whose hearts God had touched, headed back to Gibeah. But not everyone was pleased with this development. Some people mocked him, saying, "How will this man save us?" They offered no gifts and shunned him, while Saul remained silent.
