The Lord called to Moses from the tent of meeting, speaking to him in this way:
If any Israelite brings a sacrifice to the Lord, he must bring one from the livestock, either from the herd or the flock. If his offering is a burnt sacrifice from the herd, he shall offer a male without defect from his own free will at the entrance to the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord.
He must place his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted as atonement for him. He must kill the bull before the Lord, and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall bring the blood and sprinkle it around on the altar that stands at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
The priest shall then skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. Aaron's sons, the priests, shall build a fire on the altar and arrange the wood in order over the flames. They shall place the parts – including the head and fat – in order on the wood that lies on the fire burning on the altar.
The priest shall then burn all of it on the altar to be a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, producing a sweet aroma for the Lord.
If his offering is from the flock, whether sheep or goats, he shall bring a male without defect as a burnt sacrifice. He shall kill it on the north side of the altar before the Lord, and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall sprinkle its blood around on the altar.
He shall then cut it into pieces – including its head and fat – and the priest shall arrange them in order on the wood that lies on the fire burning on the altar. The priest shall bring all of these parts, wash their internal organs and legs with water, and burn them on the altar as an offering made by fire, producing a sweet aroma for the Lord.
If his burnt offering is from birds – such as turtledoves or young pigeons – he shall bring one to the altar. The priest shall wring out its blood at the side of the altar and burn its head on the altar.
He shall then remove its crop with its feathers and cast it beside the altar, where the ashes are kept on the east side. He must split the bird in two but not tear it apart; then the priest shall burn it on the altar over the wood that lies on the fire burning on the altar – it is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, producing a sweet aroma for the Lord.
