The people who had been carried away from Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar returned to Jerusalem and Judah. Each person went back to his own city.

Among them were Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mizpar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah, who had come with Zerubbabel. The men of the people of Israel numbered as follows:

The children of Parosh numbered 2,172. Those from Shephatiah totaled 372. Arah's clan consisted of 775. Pahathmoab, who belonged to Jeshua and Joab's families, had 2,812 members. Bebai's family totaled 623 individuals. Azgad's clan consisted of 1,222 members. Adonikam had 666 descendants. Bigvai came back with 2,056 men. Adin's clan numbered 454 people. Ater's descendants returned with Hezekiah as their ancestor and numbered 98 people. Bezai's family totaled 323 individuals. Jorah's clan consisted of 112 members. Hashum had 223 descendants. Gibbar had 95 individuals. Bethlehem had 123 people returning. Netophah sent 56 men back. Anathoth had 128 descendants returning to Jerusalem. Azmaveth's family numbered 42 individuals. Kirjath-arim, Chephirah, and Beeroth came with a total of 743 people. Ramah and Geba sent 621 men back. Michmas returned with 122 individuals. Bethel and Ai had 223 descendants returning to Jerusalem. Nebo had 52 people coming back. Magbish's family numbered 156 members. The other Elamites returned with 1,254 people. Harim came back with 320 descendants. Lod, Hadid, and Ono sent 725 individuals. Jericho had 345 descendants returning to Jerusalem. Senaah's clan totaled 3,630 people.

The priests included Jedaiah from the house of Jeshua, who had 973 descendants. Immer's family numbered 1,052 people. Pashur came back with 1,247 descendants. Harim returned with 1,017 members. The Levites consisted of 74 individuals led by Jeshua and Kadmiel. Asaph's singers came back with a total of 128 men. Shallum, Ater, Talmon, Akkub, Hatita, and Shobai led the descendants of the porters, totaling 139 individuals. The Nethinims were divided into groups: Ziha, Hasupha, Tabbaoth, Keros, Siaha, Padon, Lebanah, Hagabah, Akkub, Hagab, Shalmai, Hanan, Giddel, Gahar, Reaiah, Rezin, Nekoda, and Gazzam. Uzza, Paseah, Besai, Asnah, Mehunim, Nephusim, Bakbuk, Hakupha, Harhur, Bazluth, Mehida, and Harsha formed other groups. Barkos, Sisera, Thamah, Neziah, Hatipha, the servants of Solomon's household (Sotai, Sophereth, Peruda), Jaalah, Darkon, Giddel, Shephatiah, Hattil, Pochereth of Zebaim, and Ami also had people returning to Jerusalem.

The Nethinims who came from Telmelah, Telharsa, Cherub, Addan, and Immer couldn't prove their father's house or descendants, so they were considered unclean and disqualified from the priesthood. Those seeking to register among those listed by genealogy but weren't found in the records were also considered unclean.

The Tirshatha instructed these people to refrain from consuming holy offerings until a priest was present with the Urim and Thummim.

In total, there were 42,360 people who returned to Jerusalem. This number included 7,337 servants and maidservants, as well as 200 men and women skilled in singing. They brought 736 horses, 245 mules, 435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys with them.

The leaders of the families generously contributed to restore the Lord's house when they arrived at Jerusalem. They gave according to their ability: 61,000 gold drams, 5,000 pounds of silver, and 100 priests' garments were donated for the treasure of the work.

After contributing to the reconstruction of the temple, the priests, Levites, some people, singers, porters, and Nethinims settled in their cities like all Israel.
