David's Successes Against the Philistines

Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar trees and skilled workers, including masons and carpenters, to build him a house.

At that time, David realized that God had firmly established him as king over Israel, and his kingdom was greatly exalted because of the people. He took more wives in Jerusalem and became the father of many sons and daughters. Among them were Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphalet.

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they marched up to challenge him. But David learned about their plan and went out to meet them. The Philistines spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim, preparing for battle.

David prayed to God, asking, "Should I attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?" The Lord replied, "Yes, go up and I will give them into your power." So David led his troops to Baalperazim, where he defeated the Philistines. He exclaimed, "God has shattered my enemies with a mighty flood!" From then on, that place was known as Baalperazim.

After their defeat, the Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David ordered them burned. However, when they regrouped in the valley, David sought God's counsel again. This time, he received instructions not to pursue them but to wait and ambush them near the mulberry trees.

When the sound of marching echoed through the tops of those trees, David led his troops out to battle. The Lord had gone ahead, striking down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. As a result, David's reputation spread far and wide, and God inspired awe in all nations.
