Ruth Gleans in the Field of Boaz.
The right to glean was granted by law to widows, the poor, and strangers (Leviticus 19:9; Deuteronomy 24:19). However, the privilege of gleaning behind the reapers was not a guaranteed right but rather at the discretion of the landowner. It depended on their goodwill or favor.
Ruth's good fortune led her to a portion of the field that belonged to Boaz. In ancient Palestine, fields were often unenclosed, and this phrase indicates the specific area within the designated boundaries of Boaz's property.
