Then Jesus began to tell them a parable about the kingdom of God. "Notice what happens when a fig tree starts producing leaves," he said. "When its branches are still tender and it's just beginning to grow new leaves, you know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see all these things happening, you'll know that my return is near. I'm telling you this so that you can be prepared for what's coming. This generation will not pass away until everything I've said comes true.
Heaven and earth may disappear, but my words will never fade away. They are eternal and unchanging.
Jesus then turned to his disciples and said, "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself, but only the Father."
Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to each man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning. Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
This parable and these words were spoken by Jesus to his disciples in private, but they are meant for all of us who follow him. We must be prepared for his return at any moment, just as a servant waits for their master's arrival.
