In the eighteenth year of King Josiah's reign, significant progress had already been made in national reformation. The groundwork had been laid, with builders at work and money collected from the people through the Levites at the temple entrance. Various preparations were underway to eradicate idolatry throughout the land.
The king now turned his attention to repairing and enhancing the temple. He instructed Hilkiah, the high priest, to conduct a thorough assessment of what was needed to restore the temple to its former glory (see 2 Chronicles 34:8-15).
