2Sa 12:1-6 Nathan's Parable.

Nathan's Parable.

The Lord sent Nathan to David with a parable that was characteristic of the way Oriental people often convey difficult truths. This poignant story was based on a common practice among shepherds who raise lambs alongside their children and address them affectionately. The fictional offense in the parable was meant to highlight the gravity of the real atrocity.

The punishment for this crime would be death, as Nathan declared (2Sa 12:5). This sentence was harsher than the law required (Ex 22:1), but it effectively stirred David's indignation and sympathy. However, his conscience remained dormant, even as he condemned others for their transgressions while being lenient with his own sins.
