The narrative of creation continues with a description of the completion of the heavens and earth.
1. The term "heavens" here refers to the firmament or atmosphere that surrounds the earth.
A multitude of celestial bodies and all they contain are meant by "host." In Scripture, this term is often associated only with heaven, but in this context it includes the earth as well.
The phrase "were finished" indicates that creation was brought to completion. Since then, no permanent changes have been made to the natural order, no new species of animals have emerged, and no laws of nature have been altered or added.
